5 Ways To Make Money Through Comedy Writing

Believe it or not, being funny can be very profitable. Just take a look at actors, authors, comedians, and social media influencers. These people make millions of dollars, and it all stems from one thing in particular- the writing. Let’s take a look at five ways to make money through comedy writing:

  1. Start A Comedy Social Media Account

Millions of people a day flock to social media accounts for a good laugh. Even with short, meaningful, and funny content, you can attract thousands of people to subscribe to your account. That, in turn, leads to more opportunities for them to click on advertisements that you have placed with your content and get a cut from. Now there is a wide range of ways to make money from advertising on social media, and it varies depending on the platform, but it is there and ready for the taking. Especially in today’s world, folks are looking for humor to lift their spirits.

  1. Write A Blog Or News Column

Much like the social media accounts, a funny blog is an excellent way to bring in clicks to advertisements you place on your site. There is much more freedom in choosing who and what you want to advertise, and each seller will have different terms, but getting the traffic to your site is more complicated than it is on social media. An online news column is another way to go if you have previous writing history and samples to submit to the editor. Many local news outlets take unsolicited articles for review.

  1. Write For Stand Up

If you are looking to start a stand-up comedy routine, you will need to have good content. Writing for stand-up comedy will come with many wins and losses, which may have to be vetted out on stage. You will notice that comedians who stay relevant for more than a short period keep their material fresh and up to date with current events.

  1. Write A Book

There is a lot more to books than murder mystery and romance. Many authors write books based on real-life comical events and thrive at it. This could even be a collection of funny thoughts or ideas; it doesn’t have to be a book with a formatted beginning and ending. Most comedy is quick and to the point anyway, so write it that way.

  1. Write A Script

Writing a script for a movie or television show may seem far-fetched, but everyone starts somewhere. If you begin to build up a portfolio through social media and blogs first, then transitioning to scripts is easier. You can self-produce, co-produce, or even send it to get representation. While all of the other options above are much easier, becoming a comedy screenwriter is possible more than ever.

Writing comedy isn’t easy, but just like anything else, practice makes perfect. Understand that it will take time and that you can’t be deterred by rejection. Grind through it, and you will find your niche.
